Hon. (Chief) Victor Abang's Journey
The interplay of destiny and natural occurrences has long been a captivating subject for the human intellect. Humans possess remarkable creative and imaginative abilities, enabling them to transcend both themselves and the natural world through contemplation and the manipulation of natural forces. For Christians, living in harmony with others and God’s will is a fundamental purpose. This notion perfectly encapsulates the personality and drive of Victor Bisong Abang (Mature), who has ascended to the echelons of Princes while remaining grounded in the simplicity of life.
Born 56 years ago in Bawup, Boki Local Government Area, Hon. (Chief) Victor Abang embarked on his educational journey at Army Children School Obinze, Owerri, Imo State, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1982. Subsequently, he enrolled at Holy Ghost College Owerri and studied there until 1985. Through the mysterious workings of time, change, and perhaps destiny itself, Victor Abang was later transferred to Secondary Commercial School, Kakwagom, Boki, where he pursued his studies from 1985 to 1988. He then gained admission to the prestigious Mary Knoll College, Okuku, where he successfully sat for and obtained the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in 1989.
Despite being caught in the web of Africa’s economic challenges and wealth distribution disparities, Victor remained undeterred. With unwavering determination and hard work, he pursued his dream of acquiring a university education. His relentless efforts paid off, leading to his admission to the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State (1991-1997), where he studied Marketing. Later, he pursued a postgraduate degree in the same discipline at Imo State University, Owerri (2002-2004).
As Hon. Victor Bisong Abang aspires to become a role model leader, he consistently strives to enhance his skills and knowledge. This commitment is evident in his participation in various workshops, seminars, and advanced leadership courses both locally and overseas. Notable among these is the Leadership and Management Summit in Cape Town, South Africa, organized by PBG Consulting in September 2008, and the Advanced Management course for Senior Management staff of the National Assembly.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions to public service and human development, Hon. Victor Bisong Abang (Mature) was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Public Administration by Yeshua International University And Seminary and bestowed with the title of World-Class Change Ambassador for Peace and Humanity by the Youth Education and Leadership Initiative (YELI) in 2020.
In 1996, with three years of experience in student unionism, Victor’s youthful energy propelled him to be appointed as Personal Assistant to the Chairman of Boki Local Government Area. This feat provided him with firsthand experience in public service and leadership development.
Understanding the influence of leadership in society is crucial for societal advancement. While some leaders are born with innate qualities, others are shaped by their environment. Environmental factors often determine the nature and character of a leader. For instance, an individual born in an agrarian society will strive to drive social and economic reforms if given a leadership position. This brings us to the question of who a leader truly is. In simple terms, a leader is someone who envisions and inspires positive change, rallying people toward a better future. True leaders work tirelessly to transform their vision into reality while prioritizing the well-being of others. Victor Bisong Abang embodies this kind of leadership, which he has demonstrated since he entered public service in 1996.
With the return of democracy in the 4th republic in 1999, Victor was recognized for his suitability for public service, a role in which he has greatly benefitted our people. In 1999, he was appointed as the Secretary of the Management Committee at Nsadop Oil Palm Estate, Boki Local Government Area. In the year 2000, he was promoted by the Chairman of Boki Local Government Area, His Excellency Ambassador Soni Abang, to the position of Supervisor for Agriculture, Environment, and Tourism. He fulfilled his responsibilities diligently until 2002.
In 2005, Victor’s involvement in the local theater was further enhanced when he was appointed as the Chief Legislative Aide to the then-Senate President, Ken Nnamani, serving from 2005 to 2007. He subsequently held the position of Special Assistant to the Senate President on Public Affairs from 2007 to 2016 and Chief of Staff to the Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) from 2016 to 2019. In 2021 He was appointed as the Special Adviser to the Governor on the National Assembly Matters by the then-governor, Senator Ben Ayade.
In 2018, Victor Abang (Mature) was nominated as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Ikom/Boki Federal House seat in the 2019 general election. This election has remained a significant topic of political discourse in the state. However, due to the effect of change, response, and perhaps destiny, Chief Abang was nominated again as the APC candidate for Boki/Ikom Federal Constituency. And on February 25th, 2023 Hon. (Chief) Victor Abang was elected by the good people of Boki/Ikom as their Federal member of parliament.
Currently, he is a dedicated Catholic Christian and a member of the esteemed Knight of St. John International Order (KSJI). He is widely known for his philanthropic endeavors and possesses qualities of humility, accessibility, and groundedness. Additionally, he is a successful businessman and, most importantly, a caring father and loving husband.
